Night Music
DIR: Paul Jacques SUMMARY: The mysterious, reclusive Dr. Bird must travel into Sailortown on a quest to repair his beloved gramophones. WHY IT'S HERE: Paul Jacques' wonderful 'Night Music' was written, drawn and directed as part of the Vision Shorts project to provide basic film training to people recovering from mental-health problems. Although the animation is extremely basic, with characters remaining barely animate for long stretches, this rudimentary approach is also effective for the material, the intricately sketched characters and their grubby surroundings in which little comedic touches abound. 'Night Music' is instantly reminiscent of Tom Waits' spoken word tracks, with a touch of Nick Cave and a dollop of The Mighty Boosh for good measure. The seedy, unpleasant world in which 'Night Music' takes place is evoked beautifully through music, script and the great narration, which just about keeps a grip on the bizarre but internally-logical story. A little gem for lovers of the odd, 'Night Music' is a grimly hilarious piece of work.

Tony vs. Paul
DIR: Tony Fiandaca, Paul B. Cummings SUMMARY: When Paul sends an insulting letter to his friend Tony, an epic battle ensues between them. WHY IT'S HERE: Pixilation is an oft-neglected form of animation in which live-action actors are animated frame by frame. Perhaps the most famous example is Norman McLaren's 'Neighbours', an influence which looms large in the superb amateur animation 'Tony vs. Paul'. Something of an internet sensation, 'Tony vs. Paul' went on to be featured at some prominent film festivals where is garnered much acclaim for its two first-time directors Paul Cummings and Tony Fiandaca. An intricately choreographed fight between two men across various locations, 'Tony vs. Paul' must have taken ages to put together and is an absolute joy to watch. Not only does it show the brilliance that can be achieved with Pixilation, it also emerges as a triumph of fun filmmaking. It's hard not to smile as you watch these two friends have a whale of a time in front of the camera, all the while ensuring their audience has just as good a ride. I remember when I first saw 'Tony vs. Paul', it really struck me what a marvellous tool the internet is for getting all manner of amateur work out there in the public domain, as frequently this is where some of the very finest work is being done.

Rabbit
DIR: Run Wrake SUMMARY: Two sadistic, greedy children murder a rabbit and find a small, golden idol inside it who has the power to turn insects into jewels. WHY IT'S HERE: British animator Run Wrake's 'Rabbit' is a funny, grisly, brutal morality tale which Wrake created using a series of children's educational stickers from the 1950s which he found in a charity shop envelope. British audiences will likely recognise the style of the illustrations from Ladybird books and Enid Blyton novels; cherubic children with dead-eyed smiles and bright clothing. The stickers, which retain their identifying captions throughout the animation, create a humorous juxtaposition to the thoughtless, greedy and sadistic actions of the characters as they attempt to exploit the powers of a small golden idol through the most brutal methods imaginable. Though 'Rabbit' may just appear to be nasty to anyone who is unfamiliar with its visual source, it is hysterically funny for anyone who recognises the illustration style and the associated wholesomeness which Wrake so thoroughly subverts. Sadly, Wrake died from lung cancer in 2011, robbing the animation world of a great talent just as he was hitting his stride.

Derevo detstva
DIR: Natalya Mirzoyan SUMMARY: A young boy loses his teddy bear and pursues it through a series of alternate realities linked by the branches of a huge tree. WHY IT'S HERE: The debut film of 29 year old Natalya Mirzoyan, 'My Childhood Mystery Tree' has the artistic quality of classic films by the Soviet masters. Although its story treads the familiar ground of a fantasy world linked to the loss of innocence and the shift from childhood into adulthood, 'My Childhood Mystery Tree' peppers the formula with visual surprises and an ambiguous ending which combines defiance with acceptance. Of the many worlds the boy visits, perhaps the most haunting is one not unlike our own reality which suddenly becomes sinister when all the other children freeze in motionless poses. Also unforgettable is a malevolent, toy-stealing eagle who snatches precious playthings from helpless hands. Created with pastels on paper, 'My Childhood Mystery Tree' is a latter day visual masterpiece which seems to have come right out of the 70s.
